Turning Pain Into Gain

“Growth is a process. It takes time, momentum, and energy. It’s a journey.”

– Sean Bacchus, certified John Maxwell Team Coach, Speaker & Teacher

What’s one thing we all go through? Growing Pains. Remember those as a kid? Your muscles would ache, your body would be tired, you could barely sit still without trying to massage your muscles just to get relief from the relentless throb of your growing body! The pain you get from growing your leadership and your own personal development is a different kind, but can feel very similar, mentally and emotionally. Physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental pain is present in some way or another for every one of us. What isn’t true for all of us is turning that pain into gain. We’ve all heard John Maxwell say, “Life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it.” When it comes to something that can be difficult to endure, let alone learn, grow, and prosper from, John Maxwell Team member Sean Bacchus is prepared. Learning from painful experiences is exactly where he sees the most opportunity for progress: “The number one game changer for me, in terms of personal growth, was realizing that my pain wasn’t happening to me, it was happening for me as an opportunity to grow.”

Bacchus is a full time speaker who’s helping share the leadership lessons he’s learned. “I want to help those that want to know, be, and do more. If I could go back to my younger self, I would say to start earlier on growing and developing yourself. Invest in you.” A powerful voice with a powerful message. What Bacchus realized is that the things that felt difficult and uncomfortable were exactly the things that were making him become that which he desired. He knew that if you want more out of life, you have to become more in life, you must embrace what is delivered to you, and use it in your journey.

Lean Into Your Discomfort and Fear
It’s not always easy to dive into something that’s bringing you discomfort, but that’s exactly what Bacchus did when he joined the John Maxwell Team. “It can be intimidating to come onto a team where so many people have already accomplished so much and know the material so well,” said Sean, “but when I was on a call and feeling overwhelmed, I stepped into my discomfort, spoke up, and got the support I needed from Paul Martinelli.” By leaning into his discomfort and fear, Sean was able to break through his personal barriers and boundaries, and grow to a new level. In fact, he’s had several major opportunities come forward and has helped numerous clients break through their own barriers as a result of his John Maxwell Team certification and membership. The stories of his past that he used to be ashamed of he now uses as part of his powerful speeches and teachings. “The real reward for me,” Sean smiles, “is seeing those around me grow and develop based on the tools, resources, support and help I’ve been able to offer.” That kind of satisfaction is worth some moments of uncomfortable growth.

It’s not easy to step up to a new level, but it’s worth it. Sean has learned that growing pains are never one and done. “Growth is a process. It takes time, momentum, and energy. It’s a journey. The downs on that journey will lead you to ups – if you learn from the downs properly.” That’s exactly where pain turns into gain. When you have a down – and we all have them – squeeze every ounce of growth out of it that you can through examination, honesty, and action. Then you can enjoy your ups, and handle your downs, with much more ease and grace.
