The Leading Edge:
Catalyze Your Growth and Multiply Your Influence Through Masterminds

I first heard about the power of masterminds from one of my mentors, Paul Martinelli, VP of Business Development of the John Maxwell Team. He described masterminding as coming together with a group of like-minded individuals who are focused on taking results in every area of their lives to a new level.

He explained that participants meet regularly for about 90 minutes, set goals and action plans, and subsequently keep one another accountable for achieving the goals set. I was skeptical, quietly wondering how much value one could possibly get from weekly 90 minute sessions. Not much, I reasoned. Still, there is a part of me that enjoys a good challenge and I decided to see for myself and form my own mastermind.

Boy, was I in for a surprise! It was like tapping into the collective intelligence of others in a safe environment where the main objective was the growth of each participant! I have since run numerous mastermind groups with participants from diverse backgrounds: corporate organizations, NGOs, church & para-church organizations, universities (both students and faculty), the marketing field, and quite a few business people. Each one has been a richly rewarding experience not only for me as the facilitator, but also for the participants.

To this day I continue to receive raving testimonials like these: “The mastermind group was a great benefit to me. It helped ‘bridge the gap’ through the practical exercises, discussions, and goals we set for ourselves. It gave me more confidence as a leader and the impetus to set higher goals. I began to get very good results.” L.M.

“Very rich and relevant discussions. An excellent forum to meet, interact and share with like-minded professionals and sharpen your edge. If you are looking for a fun, nonconventional forum to grow your leadership, a mastermind forum is the place to be.” N.M.

Are you curious about whether a mastermind would be beneficial for you? Here are some of the benefits for participation:

  1. Shared objectives – A mastermind is designed for individuals who are interested in their personal and professional growth. Through discussions and shared ideas participants act as growth catalysts for one another.
  2. Diverse perspectives – Each participant brings their own unique perspective, and as you share with and listen to one another, you benefit from perspectives you might not have considered or had access to before. Wise King Solomon said, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
  3. Pool of resources – Participants bring to the group different skill-sets and experiences which you can tap into. Further, each person belongs to a different network and when you make a connection they can introduce you to people you should know, thus multiplying your influence.
  4. Mutual support – Participants share struggles and success stories which allows the group to learn and build upon. Through the value of shared experiences we shorten our growth path and multiply our potential to learn.
  5. Accountability – At the beginning of each meeting, participants start by sharing the progress they have made since the last session. If nothing else, knowing that you will be expected to share what you have accomplished since the group was last together encourages you to keep working towards achieving the goals you’ve set for yourself.
  6. Spaced learning – Meeting once at least once a week helps members space their learning to fit any schedule and helps to increase retention. In between sessions, participants have the opportunity to apply what they’re learning to their personal and professional lives. Consistently working on goals accelerates success!
