Millennials Will FAIL If They Don’t Follow These
3 Key Leadership Principles

“In order to grow up, you have to grow deep.”

– Katlyn Moncrief Bryan, certified John Maxwell Team Coach, Speaker & Teacher

Millennials. Lazy geniuses who are glued to their phones, live with their parents, obsess over music festivals, and seek inner peace while taking non-stop Snapchats. At least, that’s what most would agree is the perception of the millennial generation. Within this treasure trove of traits lays a vast ocean of potential, and if we can help this generation harness their abilities and develop their skills, we can help the world become a better place. Tall order? Yes. Fortunately, it’s totally doable and we think it may not be as hard as it sounds.

Over at the John Maxwell Team, we interviewed Katlyn Moncrief Bryan, a millennial and an inspirational speaker and leadership coach. She shared her outlook: “In order to grow up you have to grow deep. Your best strategy comes from when you are investing in yourself.” In fact, she’s so passionate about helping the millennial generation she’s outlined her top 3 Leadership Principles Every Millennial Should Know, and we want to share them with you!

1. Don’t go on Autopilot
Personal growth and development is a mouthful, but what it means is you’ve got to be actively invested in you. If you become an “everyday person” you’re hitting the autopilot button and not actively working on developing yourself. Big mistake. Unless you like a life of mediocrity and average results. Then by all means, keep on keepin’ on. If you are striving for something extraordinary and more fulfilling, you’ll want to invest in your own development. Fortunately, Katlyn was able to jump start this journey at a young age, and says the game changer for her was realizing the overall importance of personal growth. “The key is to avoid getting overwhelmed and stuck in autopilot,” she says. Think about that. It takes just 21 days to break a habit. That means before the end of the month, you could have altered the course of your entire life, just by turning off autopilot.

2. Find an Accountability Partner
Do what you say you’re going to do, when you say you’re going to do it. Simple in concept, tough in application. Having an accountability partner helps, and can be the difference between getting it done, and letting yourself slide. What is an accountability partner? This is a person who adds positive peer pressure to keep you on task. In other words, they hold you accountable to doing the things you’ve said you’re going to do. Since joining the John Maxwell Team, some of Katlyn’s favorite moments have been from the support system she’s built within the team. She’s been able to meet with her accountability partner, and through that process, stayed on top of her goals. She’s joined Mastermind Groups, and has gained a wealth of knowledge, while also gaining new friends and colleagues. “You help one another and really push people to go further. That’s the power of accountability.”

3. Today Really Does Matter
It’s no surprise that Today Matters by John Maxwell is one of Katlyn’s favorite books. She realizes that today truly does matter. In fact, in the grand scheme of things, it’s the ONLY thing that actually exists. Does your daily agenda reflect what you want to do? Does your agenda take you closer to your dreams? Katlyn found herself in a limbo between the way she was actually doing things, and the way she should be doing things. The words of John Maxwell echoed in her mind. “You have to give up, to go up.” It was all she could hear! From that moment forward, she decided to make a change. “I’ve given up television to see myself grow. I’ve had to give up sleep as well. I’ve seen more progress as I set time aside each day to plan, read, meditate, and change my daily habits.” Katlyn knows the daily grind means long term success.

Conclusion:
The beauty of growth is that there is no age limit. Katlyn knows better than most that, “Everyone can grow up and grow deep. It is easier to prepare a generation, than to repair a generation.” Learning how to stay off of autopilot, finding an accountability partner, and realizing that today really does matter are the keys to success for Baby Boomers and Millennials alike!
