How to Be Successful

‘If you start today to do the right thing, you are already a success, even if it doesn’t show yet.’ – John Maxwell.

We all want to be successful, don’t we?
We may not say it as boldly as that, but underneath it all – we do want to be successful.

This could be in any area of our life, such as:
• Parenting
• In your marriage
• Developing your faith
• Handling finances wisely
• In your employment
• Your leadership
Which area would you really like to be successful in now??
I have looked into the lives of those who seem to be successful and have found they have 3 key areas that have helped them achieve their success.
Let me share with you these 3 important areas.

Desire
Without a desire, you won’t change much. You simply will not have the will or energy to go for it. You simply drift from one thing to the next. There must be a desire that erupts within you that says ‘I am no longer prepared to stay as I am, but I want to grow and be successful.’ A desire for change within you will cause you to become an agent of change.

Discipline
This is a vital ingredient if you want to grow and become successful. If not present, a desire simply becomes a dream, never a reality. As John Maxwell helpfully points out – ‘Discipline for TODAY, ensures you are on the right path for tomorrow’
Make sure you build strong disciplines into your life. Make good decisions early on, then manage them daily.

Accountability
We are all human!
We can start with great expectations. We can even have good disciplines in and around us. Then the challenges of life knock at the door. We are sometimes quick to respond to them, only to find we start losing focus, don’t grow and then are not successful in an area that we wanted to be.
This is where having a mentor, a good inner circle, can be very helpful. We need to be accountable. Never think you are beyond being accountable. Accountability can be so fruitful and productive.

As a Christian, I note in the life of Jesus, he modelled accountability. He said, ‘I have come to do the will of my father.’ Jesus had vision, desire and was often found in prayer being accountable to the One who sent Him.

Accountability is good for us. I love being accountable. It ensures growth for me. I trust those who have influence in my life and therefore believe they desire the very best for me.

At the start of a new year, we often think about areas into which we want to grow. We consider our options, possibilities and dreams.
I would encourage you to do this…but mix it with these 3 key areas which I have seen modelled in others who seem to be ‘successful’
Follow these 3 areas and you will find you are on the road of growth and success for your life.
Desire + Discipline + Accountability = Success.
Go for it, my friend, and Keep Thinking Big.
