Have You Experienced the Power of a Mastermind?
As a facilitator of mastermind groups, I get the chance to see how life changing a mastermind can be. A group of like-minded people coming together to advance in their own personal journey, but able to use the knowledge and thinking of the group, is very powerful.
In this article I am going to relate the experience from a participant in one of my mastermind groups that occurred in 2011.
In that group, one individual, Manuel, was able to completely change his life and achieve their dream.
1. Goal Setting: At the first mastermind session, I handed each participant a three by five card and asked them to write their five year goals. One of the participants in this mastermind group had just retired after working over 25 years as a manufacturing manager. He really struggled with identifying his goals, because he had just achieved his lifelong dream of being able to retire. He wrote some goals, but he was not satisfied that they held any significance for him.
2. Learning: Week by week, over ten weeks, the group learned and discussed the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, by John C. Maxwell. Every week, we reviewed our goals, and everyone was challenged to re-evaluate and adjust their goals based on their new learned perspectives.
Each week, I could see Manuel begin to understand how he could still grow and challenge himself beyond retirement. He was more participative, more open to new ideas, and received input from the rest of the group.
The last law we covered as a group was the Law of Legacy, A Leader’s Lasting Value Is Measured by Succession. This law really impacted the retired participant of the group. He later told me he continued to rewrite his goals until he was able to clearly see the dream he wanted to accomplish in the next step of his life.
3. Application: Manuel decided he wanted to do something for his daughter. He made it a goal to start a business, and train her, so that he could leave it to her.
Today, Manuel and his daughter together operate a trucking company. He is only spending about one week a month being retired, and three weeks a month working, but he is still working his plan. He is increasing his time off, training his daughter, working to fully retire a second time. He is working to create the legacy he wanted to pass on to his daughter. She will become the owner of a very successful company.
This mastermind has greatly impacted his life, his family’s life, and his level of success. Starting with no goals, Manuel, decided he needed a goal. The mastermind helped him develop his ideas, and supported him in his dream.
If you have not yet experienced a mastermind, I urge you to search for a coach in your area. Mastermind groups are forming continuously. They are facilitated by a John Maxwell certified coach. Find a group to join, because life is waiting for you to take action!
