Begin
Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Begin it.
Begin ~ to start.
BE ~ to exist.
Start to exist.
Share your uniqueness.
You know, your quirky sense of humor, your intense passion for a cause, your idiosyncrasies only a mother adores – and your original thoughts of creating…
Your uniqueness is beautiful. Why not share the beauty you are hiding?
It’s a bold risk.
And it’s a courageous chance.
And it leaves us so exposed and vulnerable to rejection.
It’s scary to venture into a space we haven’t traveled to before.
How do we take this risk?
How do we embark on this road when that is the path we’ve avoided most of our lives?
But, there was a time when we shared our unique and genius thoughts and ideas…and even acted on them.
We were children.
We were unaware of peer pressure or judgment.
We were pure with our intentions and actions.
I remember the unencumbered adventures that filled my thoughts.
I dug a hole to China when I was 5.
Right off the front porch, next to my mom’s beautiful azalea bush.
I used a big spoon from the silverware drawer.
Every ten minutes or so, I would update my parents on the progression of the excavation…and the entire dig took a couple of hours at most.
A year or two later, my older sister and I set up shop to sell the crab apples and persimmons from our yard.
We didn’t have a business plan.
We didn’t fret over if we had enough nickels and dimes to make change for a customer.
We just did it.
On July 4, 1976, me, my sister, and a neighborhood friend decided we would have our own Bi-Centennial Parade.
I made a drum out of an empty coffee can. My sister had a kazoo and an American flag, and our neighbor had a pom-pom. We had on red, white and blue and marched ourselves up and down the street.
And then, without real notice, those gifts and ideas we had once shared didn’t fit into the deceitfully pretty package of societal rules…
The dreams of being a princess, crawling to China or developing a fruit stand were labeled silly or unrealistic.
We quickly learned to keep those quiet…bottled up, losing the fizzle of hope over time.
I followed the expectations set without question…only occasionally wandering off the beaten path. With those few wanderings, I paid heftily enough that the lesson was learned. It’s painful to express yourself and your uniqueness.
Yet it is excruciating to your soul to keep your gifts silent.
Allow yourself to begin again.
Start to exist.
We need your dreams.
Our world needs the hope we all once had as youngsters ~ digging holes to see the other side of the world…flying kites to touch the sun…climbing trees to sit on the clouds…
Whatever you once dreamed, believe it again.
Wasn’t there joy in those dreams?
Believe. Create. Live.
